Shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year 2023

What an incredibly proud moment for the Evo team, seeing Will - one of our fantastic apprentices - being shortlisted for Apprentice of the Year at the Somerset Business Awards 2023. We’ve been running an apprentice programme since 2014 and have been blown away by the contribution and difference that all of the apprentices have made to our business over the years.

We see our apprentices grow in confidence and go from strength to strength in their technical understanding in such a short space of time.

But it goes way beyond simply offering an apprentice scheme. As with any ambitious digital agency, it’s crucial to maintain a technological edge to deliver and support the most advanced development projects. That edge is people.

As the technology skills gap continues to impact organisations globally, having a pipeline of highly skilled employees is critical to future success. And that’s not something that happens overnight. It starts with investment in training programmes, like apprenticeships, that are built around equipping young people to enter the digital industry with the skills businesses need. A programme that challenges the traditional format of focusing solely on one discipline, like being a developer. Instead providing a rounded view of the industry and what’s involved in projects, end to end. From sales and marketing to budgeting and project management.

The digital industry has an inherent responsibility to create young professionals that will go on to shape the future of the industry.

Choosing the right young people can be difficult. Background, experience, or situation aren’t the focus, it needs to be on finding bright, keen, and talented individuals, with a mindset to challenge the norm and make a difference. Some of the most senior business leaders started out as apprentices. It’s an excellent way to start a lifelong career. Apprenticeships also offer the opportunity to build a more inclusive workplace. For example, the stats show that young women are underrepresented in tech and digital industries.

Nurturing incredible young talent and watching apprentices flourish as they begin their careers is incredibly rewarding. Seeing individuals like Will and our three other talented apprentices grow and thrive fills us with excitement about the future generations coming into our industry and where they'll take us.
